JES Workshops and Trainings

The Joyce Emergency Planning and Prep (JEPP) team has held several community orientations and trainings to familiarize residents with the shelter.  In each of these events, participants received and overview of the shelter plan - its rationale, layout and operational plan - and a tour of its designated stations, including the Disaster Service Center, Registration desk, food service area and cafeteria, dormitory and cache. They also learned how Joyce Emergency Shelter mangers would communicate within the Joyce Bible Church complex and with Incident command, located at the Clallam County Fire Protection District No. 4 administration building. JEPP intends to schedule similar management training sessions going forward.

Saturday April 22, 2023: A Joyce Emergency Shelter (JES) Management Workshop was held from 9:30-3:00 at the Joyce Bible Church. Forty-one attended. Participants learned that the shelter would open when the Washington State Governor declares an emergency. The shelter will be run entirely by volunteers from the Joyce community. Those participating in the workshop learned about how to open the shelter and get it up and running, and about the various jobs required to operate the facility and provide services for as many as 300 people, some trapped due to road closures and others unable to safely shelter in place at their homes. Various speakers presented information, reviewed procedures, and reviewed "job cards" and materials placed in labeled "job bins." Presenters also introduced the dormitory and discussed its management, and provided a tour of the shelter, its stations, and the JEPP emergency supplies and equipment securely stored on the premises.

Saturday, March 23, 2019: Following the student orientation, members of the community were invited to participate in a similar orientation. Here are a few more images of the Shelter tour and various presentations held at the Joyce Bible Church/Joyce Emergency Shelter. All Crescent School teachers and all members of the community in attendance on Saturday were given a copy of JEPP's new business card, featuring its email address, website address and Facebook page address.

The second station in these Emergency Shelter tours took members of the community into the Fellowship Hall for an introduction to JEPP's plan for providing water and food following a major, highly disruptive earthquake. Each group received a brief talk regarding how the Shelter will be managed and how meals will be served. Separate presentations covered JEPP's two manually-pumped water filtration trailers, JEPP's large mobile field kitchen, JEPP's cache, and planned meal menus.  Here we see examples of these presentations.

The third and final station of these Shelter tours introduced the community to the planned dormitory, where presentations covered reception, personal belongings, dormitory rules (one of which calls for no pets indoors), sleeping arrangements, restrooms and toileting, sanitation and the planned provision of limited first aid treatment and medical care. At the end of each tour, members of the community were given ample opportunity to wander back through the displays, interact with JEPP representatives, and receive answers to questions.

Friday, March 22, 2019: Crescent School's grade 4-12 students were introduced to the Joyce Emergency Shelter and its purpose. Members of the Joyce Emergency Planning and Prep (JEPP) team led tours, class by class, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. The next day, beginning at noon, the full community received a similar overview of the shelter plan - its rationale, layout and operational plan - and a tour. In each instance, following an opening presentation, groups visited the Old Sanctuary/Help Desk area, which will house the Disaster Service Center, Visitor Service Center and Incident Command post in a crisis. The images below depict the first two stages of this Joyce Bible Church/ JEPP Shelter tour. JEPP will scheduled additional orientations and shelter management training sessions in the years ahead.
